Scary Tip # 1

This is the season for scary movies.

One thing I found as a great way to reinforce that it's only make believe is using the "Making Of" featurette found on DVDs. For example "Pirates of the Caribbean" (POC) could easily scare children or give them some bad ideas about rough housing.

Reviewing the featurette you can reinforce:
  • The sword fights are carefully choreographed and practiced with fake swords.
  • The jump from the window scene was into a large mat.
  • The walking the plank scene had scuba divers just out of scene to insure Elizabeth's safety.
  • The skeletons in the moonlight are shown as actors with CGI enhancement.
After this, you can watch the first POC on DVD and the second that is still in theatres.

Some "Making Of"s may mention stunt men or things that went wrong. This can let children know that it takes professionals to do certain things and even then no one is invincible.

These are important lessons that I reinforce especially these days when there are such fantastic special effects.
